I love pedestrian pseudo-blues! I love good blues, I just think that Cream was more a psychedelic pop band than a true blues band. Although Clapton left the Yardbirds because according to him they weren't being serious about blues, I think that the Yardbirds were better drinkers of muddy water when they wanted to... |

ahh yes but it has to be remembered that Clapton left the Yardbirds when they wanted to release pop music and get in the charts (For Your Love)
and he left them to join a true blues band, John Mayall's Bluesbreakers, Cream came later in his career

ahh yes but it has to be remembered that Clapton left the Yardbirds when they wanted to release pop music and get in the charts (For Your Love) and he left them to join a true blues band, John Mayall's Bluesbreakers, Cream came later in his career Yes, I had pointed out that too, but when the Yardbirds did blues songs (before or after Clapton left the band) I think they got better the essential blues feeling. I love several blues-based songs by Cream like "Politician" or "Crossroads", and of course, Cream was technically better than the Yardbirds, but blues is not about instrumental virtuosity or long guitar solos, it transmits bluesy feelings in a simpler way. And about John Mayall's Bluesbreakers, yes, they were certainly true bluesmen, more than the Yardbirds and Cream. |

I think "Dance The Night Away" is a very good song missed in that compilation, but "Wrapping Paper" was surely included because it was their first single. You're right that they were essentially a live band, but half of their studio songs are really great in my opinion, that's why I would have expected better things from most of the other half. Anyway, I prefer a band like Cream with mixed quality outputs than a constant band with really few truly great songs. A great song, influenced of course by The Byrds We have now lost Jack Bruce RIP Jack and thanks for all the great music. |
